Good morning, r/ethereum; everything you need to know in this thread; read me <3

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:15 PM PDT

    Welcome!

I would like to welcome everyone to r/ethereum. Please protect this community's philosophy by respecting our rules (see sidebar or scroll down). Let me quote the most important ones here for reference:

    • Keep price discussion and market talk to subreddits such as /r/ethtrader.
    • Keep mining discussion to subreddits such as /r/ethermining.
    • Keep ordinary ICO advertisements to subreddits such as r/ethinvestor.

Feel free to use this thread to say 'Hi, I'm new!' or 'Hi, I'm not!'. If you have a question, feel free to comment and ask it below. But first make sure you are fully synchronized and have a look at FAQ on Ethereum Stack Exchange. Do you have any question that feels dumb? Try r/ethereumnoobies :D

Don't forget to check out /r/ethdev for the Ethereum developer community and post your diamond-shaped cat findings on r/ethsightings (don't forget to subscribe!). Thanks for flying with r/ethereum! :-)

    Getting Started

    What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a cutting-edge blockchain-based distributed computing platform, featuring smart contract functionality. It provides a decentralized virtual machine, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), that can execute peer-to-peer contracts using a crypto-fuel called Ether.

    Where do I start?

You want to start by getting yourself set up with a wallet. You have some choices:

    What next?

Get Ether, write smart contracts, build DApps, and dive into Ethereum:

    • Slurs of any kind
    • Posting people's private information

If you can't play nice with others, you will not be allowed to post here.

Ether Price, Market, and Mining discussions

Discussion related to the price of ether, buying, trading, market speculation, or any other price/market talk should be posted on /r/ethtrader, a third-party Subreddit not moderated by us. Besides, keep mining discussion to Subreddits such as /r/EtherMining and obvious ICO advertisements to r/ethinvestor or similar.

    Duplicate threads

Duplicate threads may be deleted. It is up to the discretion of the mods.

No spamming or drive by posting

Spamming will lead to post deletion and a possible ban. Posts created by accounts that self-delete immediately will be deleted right away - no drive by posting.

    Using multiple accounts

Creating multiple accounts to get around Reddit or Subreddit rules is not allowed and will likely result in a permanent ban.

    Misleading titles

Posts with purposely misleading or unsubstantiated titles will be removed.

Karma & age requirements for posting submissions

All post submissions should be made from accounts at least ten days old with a minimum of 20 comment karma. This is to keep trolls and spam-bots to a minimum. Exceptions may be made on a discretionary basis; please do not message the mods for more information.

    Moderation philosophy

/r/ethereum is a place for the open discussion about the Ethereum software, protocol, distributed applications, and related technologies. As moderators, we are here to make sure the conversation stays civil and productive. We will not censor posts based on personal ideology and welcome constructive discourse.

    What we ask our users

    • Please utilize the up-vote and down-vote buttons. This is a built-in moderation tool that is very powerful.
    • If you submit a report about a post or comment, please provide as much detail as possible to help us more quickly sort through our reported posts/comments.
    • Please don't report posts or comments you disagree with, only about things that break the rules.
    • We welcome discussions about other crypto-currencies and Ethereum implementations, but if the topic is already being extensively covered by other threads, we kindly ask you to consider posting it to a more specific Subreddit. You can check an extensive (but not comprehensive) list of Ethereum-related Subreddits on the "All Ethereum" Multireddit.

Please can we as a community discuss EIP960 being included in the upcoming Constantinople hardfork along with a reduction in block reward.

    Posted: 30 Aug 2018 11:44 PM PDT

Technically it would be very easy to integrate into the Constantinople hardfork and at this stage I feel many others would also support the topic of an ETH hardcap being discussed as we are in the stages of addressing an unnecessary amount of inflation that has been long known about.

See Vlads Medium post from all the way back to the beginning of 2017 for reference about this: https://medium.com/@Vlad_Zamfir/the-case-for-smaller-block-rewards-fb0eab38e15c

The 2 popular choices for block reward reduction thus far have proven to be EIP858 with 1 ETH per block and 2 ETH per blocks with EIP 1234. Keeping the block reward the same at 3 ETH shouldn't even be an option really with over 99% of the community vote weighing in favor a needed reduction:

    https://old.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/9bc8i9/monthlong_ethereum_issuance_reduction_coin_vote/

I would like to point out that current ETH inflation schedule is not what was originally projected back in 2016 as per the post by Vitalik here for reasons relating to the difficulty bomb delay: https://old.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/5izcf5/lets_talk_about_the_projected_coin_supply_over/dbc66rd

This is a strong justification for lowering the block reward.

There has been some good discussion happening so far about a hardcap on the Ether supply, and is one of the most commented on EIP's.

At 32 ETH per staking validator node, in theory if the hardcap was set at 128,000,000 this would mean a total of 4,000,000 validator nodes if all Ether was staked. Just some food for thought in relation to Vitaliks 120-140M proposal.

We need to address the ongoing inflation problem Ethereum is facing currently. It shows progress that we do address it and would be a huge positive push forward for Ethereum reaching a level of higher maturity.

Please see Vitaliks comments from April on twitter regarding a hardcap.

People do broadly support fixed supply

Community has gone a long way from "are the core devs up high going to make this happen or not?" closer to "I don't care about the source, I think it's a good idea", but there's still a long way to go to get there

We need to more actively encourage active community involvement especially in deciding economic parameters, which are legitimate tradeoffs between goals and not just a "technocratic security setting".

(Hence why we should bring EIP960 discussion into this developer meeting)

I do now believe that fixed supply is worth considering.

    Arguments:

With ASICs, PoW issuance fails at making coin distribution more egalitarian

With PoS, PoW issuance not needed for security

With rewards coming from rent+other burned fees, can have rewards without issuance

    Source: https://twitter.com/vitalikbuterin/status/980744740277661696

I am agreeing with Vitalik that a hardcap would be well worth the effort. Let's see if by discussing it more we can reach some organic conclusions as a community.

Thoughts on the Ethereum Core Devs Meeting Constantinople Session #1 [08/31/18]

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:29 AM PDT

    Meeting just ended.

All EIPs currently slated for Constantinople confirmed.

Next HF tentatively slated for 8 months after Constantinople.Difficulty Bomb delayed for 12mo(?).

There was a lot of discussion on Issuance Reduction and ProgPow/ASIC resistance.

In the end EIP-1234 prevailed(and thanks to Souptacular & Piper for recognizing the issue as time-sensitive and that while consensus on the issue hasn't coalesced around a specific EIP the broad intent of the community is clear in wanting a reduction).

It's expected that in the next two weeks or so EIP-1234 will be moved from Draft as Final and the be accepted to be included in the Constantinople HF (ETA is around Devcon4,possibly later).

What really surprised me was the absence of /u/ohgodagirl or someone else from the ProgPOW team to champion their proposal.

There seemed to be a very ambivalent attitude toward ProgPOW and that some core devs we're not that familiar with it.

I can understand the skepticism surrounding a fairly invasive change to the algo, some technical and the need to give the entire ecosystem some time to build mining tools/infrastructure to properly adopt it .It's also to be expected that some core devs are wary of devoting precious time working on altering the PoW stuff when PoS is the clear direction forward.

With that being said i think there should be no questions regarding the detrimental effect of having a large part of the network hashrate being provided by ASICS. ETH specifically adopted Ethash as the PoW algo to stave off asics for as long as possible.

Imho the the eth devs have a clear mandate to keep intact the original vision and to keep ETH ASIC-resilient.

I understand PoS is the holy grail and i do agree but since the timeline for Casper FFG has shifted significantly in the last year i think ProgPOW should be STRONGLY evaluated and, barring any technical showstopping issues , be adopted.

I feel like most ICOs and benefits of the blockchain tech is so far away from our daily lives and all this time we have been just sitting on the side lines and hoping someone can make it all work out for us.

What if we can have all the tools to achieve our own goals ?

Check it out my project and tell me what you think!! We can work together.
