    ZCash Mining Profitability Cratering

    Hey all,

I have just started to dip my feet into the GPU mining realm by hooking up my gaming rig (x1 980 Ti Classified) to flypool and mining Zcash a couple weeks ago.

Initially, the estimated payout calculator on my flypool miner page was around $70-75/mo. Now, it has fallen to around $45/mo. Performance hasn't seemed to change, I'm still running around 440-450 sols.

I was thinking about finally building an 8 GPU rig, but now this has me questioning things... Did something happen to temporarily lower returns or is this possibly a longer term trend?

    GPU riser power cables

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 07:25 AM PST

After doing more research I decided I probably need to change the power cables I have. Currently my risers are converting from molex to SATA connection. The SATA connection is then connected into my PSU. Does anyone have a good source for cables that don't convert to SATA and just go directly from the molex connection to the PSU? Am I thinking about this correct?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) (Updated 02-27-18)

    • Can I select my own miner or a different miner from the Waterhole miner? Unfortunately no, at least not at this time. The miner and GUI has been optimized to function at the best speeds for your hardware

    • How do I set the fan speeds on the miner? Please use your GPU's manfacturer software (MSI Afterburner, Asus GPU Tweak II, etc.) or a third party software (Speedfan, etc.) to manage the fan speeds

    • What is the minimum withdrawal to an external wallet from the Waterhole wallet? Currently it is 0.005 BTC, 0.001 BCH, 0.01 ZEC, 0.05 ETH, 0.5 ETC, 0.01 LTC, 0.1 XMR, and 0.001 DASH.

    • Why do I need to add the folder exclusion to the Windows Defender Security Settings for the miner software? On Windows 10, the OS blocks many installations when it comes to third-party installs, especially for miners. Waterhole IO strives for safety and security for our users and will never compromise your computer or mobile devices.

    • Does Waterhole IO operate as an exchange? No, Waterhole IO does not operate as an exchange. The marketplace is simply a platform to connect buyers and sellers together.

    • Are the troughs or dips in the hashrate reported online normal? Yes, as the pool receives only valid shares from the miners while your miner will report the theoretical maximum hashrate possible. The average hashrate, however, will be consistent as reported from your GPU's.

    • What fees are associated with the Waterhole mining software? If you are using the Waterhole pools in conjunction with the software then there is no fee. However, if you choose to select another pool, then the fee is 1% to cover maintenance and development cost.

Questions, comments, feedback? You can contact us directly at help@waterhole.io or comment below and we do appreciate your inputs to help improve the quality of our work.

Tell me about the old days

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:22 AM PST

I got into mining late November with my gaming rig running a 1080ti. Dumb me I should have gotten in a lot earlier. Can someone tell me what was the profit per day like when the 1080ti came out. I am curious as I went from making $5-$8 a day down to $3 if I am lucky sometimes. Is that a normal for the old days and I am just spoiled?

Headless or P106 cards on smOS?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 05:07 AM PST

Internet seems devoid of experience on this topic. I only run smOS on my machines and am looking to fill one more motherboard with 1060's but not keen on the pricetags. I know resell isn't going to happen down the line and i'm OK with that.

Just hoping someone else out there is running smOS and knows if these chinese cards will run with it.

    7870le over/underclock settings?

    Posted: 01 Mar 2018 03:11 AM PST

Hi. I have a couple of 7870le cards which are lying around and have them running on Nicehash for ease of use. Each is currently earning approx 70c/day on standard settings.

Anyone recommend any over/underclock settings on this card that may help boost that up?

[Serious] Why would anyone start GPU mining now?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:58 AM PST

I've been GPU mining for a couple of months now and during this time, have witnessed my GTX 1080 TI daily earnings go from ~9 USD to under ~3 USD.

If the 1080 TI is one of the highest earning cards (I'm not counting ROI time here), and has experienced such a hefty drop, why would anyone bother getting in to GPU mining now?

    Summer is coming

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 07:56 PM PST

My basement is currently about 80 degrees right now with the furnace fan running constantly to circulate the hot air to the rest of the house. It sure helped with the heating bill but now it's getting warmer outside. Do I install an air conditioner in the basement and waste electricity on conditioned air or open windows and run the risk of using humid air to cool the rigs?

I need to get some longer usb 3.0 cables. I can just grab any usb 3.0 cable, and everything should still be stable right?

    Thanks.

    Powered Riser and PSU Question...

    Posted: 28 Feb 2018 11:25 PM PST

I have my rig setup with 6 powered risers which work fine however with all the extra cables, it makes the rig a mess. I tried removing the molex connectors from the risers and just run 2 molex cables to my ASRock H81 motherboard however none of my GPUs work after trying this. From what I understand powering the cards via the motherboard molex connectors should be sufficient so I'm not sure why it's not working. Do I need special non-powered risers to do this or am I just missing something?

Also, I'm using a Corsair TX850M PSU however it only came with 2 PCIE cables of which both have just 2 PCIE connectors so I'm having to use another power supply for the remaining cards. Does Corsair or any aftermarket manufacturers produce PCIE cables that have 3 or more connects per cable?
