[Megathread] CFTC & SEC Regulatory Hearings

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:41 AM PST

PSA: "Technical Analysis" is a made-up term to hide the fact that calling it what it actually is, "Chart-reading", makes it sound silly

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:21 AM PST

Remember this next time you see a chart with silly arbitrary lines and shapes drawn all over it. And when people tout their successes with it, remember that by definition, someone predicting something will go up or down will be right half the time, and that if you give a everyone in a football stadium a coin to flip eight times, around 250 of them will flip heads every time and all be convinced they are the most skilled coin flippers in the stadium.

If you need actual researched proof that chart reading is ultimately fruitless, there are numerous well-regarded books on the matter, of which "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" is my personal favorite.

    Happy trading!

US: SEC, CFTC Cryptocurrency Meeting Continues Existing Regulatory Narrative

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 06:59 AM PST

The dedicated session involving the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is taking place Tuesday, Feb. 6. The written testimonies of Jay Clayton and J. Christopher Giancarlo, the chairmen of the SEC and the CFTC respecitvely, have been released to the public.

Cryptocurrency users have reacted calmly to the major meeting of US regulators in which they discussed cryptocurrencies, ICOs and ETFs.

Yes BTC is down -65% from it's peak. But remember it's also up +21% over past month, 206% over past 6 months, 746% over past year, and 1687% over past 2 years.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:48 PM PST

Today is just a walk in the park for us old timers. Yes many of us have made some bad trades but that's why it's important to have a holding stack you don't touch.

Many traders get screwed now but for long term investors this is just a walk in the park and an opportunity to buy more.

Percentage charts can be found using the legacy Google Finance site and/or Bitcoinity.

Edit: The 21% up isn't over past month it's over past 3 months.

    Moon Math Update : 2018-02-05

Here's to potentially being wrong about a large move in personal record time.

Still, the outlook hasn't changed since Friday's rant, though:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/7uu4ju/moon_math_update_20180202/

So, I reckon I'll either be epically wrong or somewhat right this time tomorrow.

We went down a lot faster than I expected. We didn't bounce that hard off the bottom of the channel either. It seems like everyone expected that to happen, so it did. I don't expect the channel to break and there seems to be a general lack of effort to force the issue from the market.

I think we're waiting on more news from the SEC, and we'll hover here until we know more.

If you need distraction, the Falcon heavy launches tomorrow.

    Good Hunting

    Predicting Bitcoin Bottom $5,000

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:18 AM PST

    Hello all,

I'd like to share my chart outside of tradingview. Using the standard phases of a bubble I mapped out bitcoins path over the last month. https://www.tradingview.com/chart/BTCUSD/RUhQOl66-Bitcoin-Bubble/

We have entered despair and I am predicting ~$5,000 as the bottom of this bubble.

I believe it will take another 2+ months of time before we will get confirmation of a bottom and 3-12 months before the next bear market starts and we attempt to break the all time high.

Is this a start to return to mean

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:07 AM PST

Based on already seen chart https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-ab0ac83a04a4cd48c78fff0985434e0b.webp do you think that despair phase has already bottomed. Based on my guess we are already returning to the mean.

Seems like the actions today is beyond the crypto market. So question is, does the stock market bring down the crypto market, or do people in stocks see that cryptos are already down 60% and move money over?

U.S. Securities and Exchange LEAKED testimony breakdown. What it all means and how this will affect the market.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 02:49 PM PST

The US Securities and Exchange (SEC) will be meeting tomorrow to discuss in detail their plans for cryptocurrencies. Seems as though some people think the leaked document is good news. I disagree. I believe this is not good news nor is it bad news.

Basically, they want to regulate icos and treat crypto as securities. Source: took directly from Leak PDF

    1. "increased federal regulation of cryptocurrency trading platforms"

    2. "Financial products that are linked to underlying digital assets, including cryptocurrencies, may be structured as securities products subject to the federal securities laws even if the underlying cryptocurrencies are not themselves securities."

What implications does this have? Most likely we will initially see a crackdown on ICO advertising followed by some sort of regulation that all ICOs must meet before US citizens are allowed to invest. Furthermore I expect major exchanges residing in the USA to be subject to some type of regulation, this may also have an effect on US citizens using international exchanges.

I do not expect this to have any short-term effects on the market. I imagine long term this will bring more security to crypto, followed by a flood of new money.

I will post the full leaked document as well as potential investments that may benefit the most from this here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/116014865776792/

The Stock Market Is a Lot Like Bitcoin

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:17 AM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-02-06/the-stock-market-is-a-lot-like-bitcoin

I see some technical errors/issues (e.g., his statement about anonymous transactions) but I find his core argument to be extremely thought-provoking.

"In a sense, thanks to the algorithmic shift, the stock market has become more like the one in bitcoin, also driven largely by algorithmic trading. It's not that the assets in such markets don't have a fundamental value -- bitcoin does, too, insofar as it allows anonymous transactions that are not transparent to the authorities. It's just that the fundamental value matters far less than speculative opportunities, which computers, with their superior ability to analyze statistics, can detect better than humans. Relying primarily on information that can lead to short-term gains means, essentially, feeding on what the rest of the market is doing to a greater degree than a human investor does."

If the stock market is crashing, too...

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 09:12 PM PST

Would this be a good point to flee into gold and crypto? I mean, as regulators worldwide try to ban crypto trading, isn't that a good sign to buy into it? For me, it looks like they want to try to rescue the old system. But with ATH in every stock, it's obvious, there couldn't be any money left to sustain this market. Wouldn't it be the best time to buy into the new world of crypto? I have a big part of my savings in stocks and I want to sell about one half of it. What should I do with this money? What's your opinion?

    Is crypto considered a luxury-investment?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:10 AM PST

    I just made that up...

But luxury-goods typically depreciate in value much more drastically than the stock market does for example.

If people are losing their shirts on stocks, nobody has any money to buy fancy pieces of art.

And today we have seen the crypto markets tumble a significant portion more than the DOW Jones did.

Is there a chart to compare bitcoin's behaviour year by year?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:53 AM PST

I mean something like this: Imgur

It would be very useful to detect possible upcoming behaviours. With this chart we could have seen in december that every january prices go down...and we could see in july that it probably also goes down on august...

Obviusly we would need to adjust the scale because in previous years we were in much lower prices...
