    Dispelling myths about Request Network

    Posted: 26 Dec 2017 04:55 PM PST

Request Network is mentioned almost every other thread, and I'm reading lots of really uninformed and ignorant opinions from those who fancy themselves very savvy investors. So I took it upon myself to dispel some of the REQ myths. I am a venture-backed entrepreneur and product designer, and while that doesn't make me infallible, I do believe I have enough experience to speak on these topics in a more informed manner, more than many of the REQ investors I'm seeing.

Myth 1: YC = high chance of success. The majority of YC companies fail, and the value derived today from the YC network has diminished considerably. In the early days, they accepted only a handful of startups twice a year, providing them with considerable guidance. Since then, the program has grown significantly, accepting tens, if not hundreds of startups per year, limiting their capacity to offer each startup proper attention. Being "YC-backed" is still valuable today, specifically for raising your first post-YC round of funding, but beyond that, there's very little in the way of "force multipliers" that you can gain with the YC seal.

I want to note that I have heard from YC alumn that Request Network was a pivot of the company that YC initially backed, and that YC did not accept the team into the program for the Request Network concept. This is more or less confirmed by looking at the founders' LinkedIn profiles. They founded a company named Moneytis immediately before founding Request Network, and on Moneytis' Crunchbase profile, you'll find YC is a backer. https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/moneytis. This isn't a bad thing – it's somewhat common for YC companies to pivot mid-program, and YC could very well be fully onboard the REQ train.

Myth 2: They've got an incredible team. Do they? What makes you think that? Looking at Etienne and Christophe's backgrounds, you find that they (as mentioned above) founded a company called Moneytis as an international payments platform. I haven't found any information that indicates large partnerships, impressive growth or adoption. In fact, that they pivoted to Request Network is a possible sign that perhaps Moneytis wasn't working as well as they'd hoped, or wasn't as good of an iteration on the payments play as they believe Request Network to be. Beyond Moneytis, I haven't found anything that indicates the team is stellar – past acquisitions, c-level / executive roles at growth-stage co's or large corporations, etc. I want to note that I have no problem assuming they're talented and driven.

Myth 3: The product looks great. The only working product they have ever shown (to my knowledge) is a very simple frontend to submit a Request with average design and minimal functionality. Beyond that, every single product demo and image you see on their site is a mockup or rough prototype. While they seem to be ahead of schedule on their roadmap, and while I'm sure much of the work is on building out the underlying platform, the product they've shown thus far is not impressive by any means. I'm all for MVPs, starting with a rough product and iterating, but these comments I keep reading praising the current product are wholly unsubstantiated.

Lastly, I want to say that none of the above is meant to convince you that REQ will fail. I want to see them succeed, and they very well could. Teams without stellar backgrounds, with worse products, and who weren't lucky enough to go through YC have become multibillion dollar companies – it's possible. But that doesn't mean we should be dishonest, overly embellish, or falsely overstate the strengths of this project. If anything, you want the team aware of their weaknesses.
