MAPS Receives $1,000,000 in Bitcoin from the Pineapple Fund

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 01:16 PM PST

On December 14, 2017, the Pineapple Fund, set up by an anonymous cryptocurrency philanthropist, donated 59.89 Bitcoin (BTC), with a value of $1,000,000, to the non-profit Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), as part of a plan to give away over $86 million in BTC to charities and causes around the world.

The Pineapple Fund's gift will directly fund MAPS' upcoming Phase 3 clinical trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The cryptocurrency community has rallied behind MAPS' work, having donated over $120,800 in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin since 2013, plus the new support from the Pineapple Fund. These gifts have significantly contributed to MAPS' international psychedelic research, public education, psychedelic harm reduction, and advocacy projects.

We are beyond thankful and inspired by /u/PineappleFund for accepting our donation request. We would also like to extend our gratitude to /r/Bitcoin community members who supported MAPS in the initial thread, including /u/Pixaritdidnthappen, /u/beast-freak, /u/BakingTheCookiesRigh, /u/VerucaNaCltybish, /u/Aaron_FF, /u/joekki, /u/SolidCake, /u/volcanoesarecool, /u/shaggytits, /u/ibrokemywatch, /u/ANinjaOkraSlob, /u/Ou812icRuok, /u/dhxdhxdhx, /u/aorshahar, and /u/nw2shrms.

"The Pineapple Fund's outstanding generosity exemplifies how the growth of cryptocurrency can be leveraged for profound social change," says MAPS Founder and Executive Director Rick Doblin, Ph.D. "The blockchain community is helping to lead the way, not only in decentralized technologies and currencies, but in giving the gift of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy to the world in order to heal trauma and bring greater compassion to psychiatry and medicine."

As a non-profit with no government funding for psychedelic research, MAPS relies on contributions from individuals, businesses, and foundations to make psychedelic therapy a legal treatment. MAPS estimates that Phase 3 clinical trials will cost $26 million. With $17.3 million already raised or pledged, MAPS still needs $8.7 million to make MDMA-assisted psychotherapy legally available to millions of people suffering with PTSD.

MAPS was an early supporter of cryptocurrency donations, and we began accepting Bitcoin donations in December 2013. Currently, MAPS is able to accept cryptocurrency donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin.

The steep growth in the cryptocurrency market has created a promising new source of support for non-profit psychedelic research, having grown almost 50,000% since 2013 to over $500 billion in December 2017, a larger market capitalization than Berkshire Hathaway and Amazon.

In August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, acknowledging that it "may demonstrate substantial improvement over existing therapies" and agreeing to expedite its development and review. If the trials show positive results, FDA approval for MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD is expected by 2021.

Founded in 1986, MAPS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational organization that develops medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana. Since its founding, MAPS has raised over $45.5 million for psychedelic therapy and medical marijuana research and education. For more information, visit maps.org.

MAPS-sponsored clinical trials are conducted by the MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MPBC), a wholly owned subsidiary of MAPS formed in 2015 for the special purpose of balancing social benefits with income from legal sales of MDMA, other psychedelics, and marijuana. For more information, visit mapsbcorp.com.

    Thank you!

Get Andreas Antonopoulos on Mad Money with Jim Cramer

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 03:55 PM PST

I'm on Twitter just to follow the Crypto news, but I get sucked into things. I notice Jim Cramer says inaccurate things about crypto all the time. But he always responds, the guy is a closet blockchain lover.

If it's cool with /u/andreasma I would like to see him on there as our spokesman. Like I said, I'm willing to put up $1,000 worth of crypto to donate to a charity to get him on. Here is my tweet

If you believe in this, then upvote like, retweet, etc. I'll hold my end to the bargain with my donation. I think this exposure is good for the entire crypto space

    Thanks

Crazy idea: Create a Moon bounty by launching a private key to the Moon

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 12:16 PM PST

Engrave a private key on a metal plate, put some Bitcoin in the associated address, and launch it to the Moon. At some point as the value of Bitcoin rises and the cost of launch comes down, it will be worth it to send a mission to retrieve it.

Anyone who wants to add to the bounty can send coins to the address.

Everyone that's mainly trading in/buying Bitcoin and is concerned about it's network should start using Bitstamp. They transact in batches, has been supporting Segwit from 7th of September, and they pay for all outgoing fees.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 01:18 AM PST

Title says it all. Everyone that's complaining about the current situation should move their business over to Bitstamp for stated reasons. Plus they are fully regulated and licensed in Luxembourg, which means multiple audits every year, and they hold most of their holdings in cold storage. I think it's one of the best exchanges for Bitcoin's ecosystem.

I'm not shilling for them, my reason for posting this is because I want to motivate users of this sub to stop just complaining and start being more proactive - we should all show our fuck you to those exchanges that doesn't care by moving our business to those that care.

An Anonymous Bitcoin Millionaire Is Donating Their Fortune to Charities and It Seems Legit

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 06:40 PM PST

After Roger Ver openly admitting that he will promote Bitcoin Cash as Bitcoin we all should report the website as a phishing site to google!

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 05:32 AM PST

    Source for the claim: https://np.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/7jg265/1000000_bitcoin_cash_wallets_have_now_been/dr6qf17/

    Go here to report: https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/

    Roger Ver's site: www.bitcoin.com

As pointed out by /u/codedaway below, you can also report /r/btc to reddit for violating reddit's self promotion rules.

Edit: as was pointed out by some, phishing might not be matching exactly. Wiki defines phishing as "Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and money), often for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.". I think that the last part is the most important aspect. Roger Ver and thus Bitcoin.com seems to try to disguise - with their app and what Roger Ver wrote in the linked comment - bitcoin cash as a trustworthy entity (bitcoin). In my books this is close enough to be counted as phishing. The means might be different but the intent is the same. Please decide for yourself.

In the end this is only a report - so google and reddit have to decide whether they are legit or not.

Got ride of all my Bcash, Roger is a threat to crypto

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 08:13 AM PST

I was happy holding both Bitcoin and Bcash but now its more than enough.

After all the crap he says, I just couldn't take it anymore, he act as he is better than anyone because he has money, does everything in his power to destroy the current Bitcoin for his own wealth, he doesn't care about others.

And lately he admitted to promote bcash as bitcoin...I mean really Roger ? stop misleading, lying, promoting an alt scam.

Hey guys. It's time for me to not cash out. It's been great, and it's going to get even greater, but at a certain point you have to do what is right for yourself and your future. So I'm going to not cash out.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 01:06 PM PST

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here for providing me with knowledge and insight on this journey. I think at this point, I'm just going to settle down and not cash out. Some people are greedy and want their money now, but I'd rather make a lot more money later. And I'd like to amend the standard "unrealized gains..." line:

Unrealized gains are always bigger than realized gains, despite their fictitiousness.

Wouldn't you rather have big gains?

Thanks for your time. And if you're feeling similarly to me, please also do not cash out. You will be glad <insert literally any future timeline here> from now.
